About You

Bare feet touching green moss in nature.

Why A Fern needs her forest

Because a Fern is so connected to her environment, when she spends years without the conditions, connection and support she needs to thrive, the impact can show up across her mind, body and life.

Sometimes, you can see it, as she may look visibly low in mood. Her spark may have gone and she can appear flat, tired, withdrawn or unhappy, blaming it on hormones, age or life. But often times, she hides it extremely well. She can show up, smile, work hard, achieve, socialise, keep busy and tell everyone she’s fine, while privately feeling depleted, lonely, unsettled or like something just isn’t right.

She may not even be able to put her finger on what is wrong. She simply knows she doesn’t feel like herself anymore.

This is what can happen when a Fern tries to do life without the right eco-system – without the connection, support, protection and community she was created for.

🌿 Instead, she may rely on busyness, achievement, food, alcohol, distractions or other comforts to help her feel grounded and settled. They can bring temporary relief, but they don’t necessarily give her what she is really looking for: somewhere she feels she truly belongs.

🌿 She may slip back into old habits or familiar comforts, even when she knows those things aren’t really helping her.

🌿 People may misunderstand her and see her as distant, guarded, withdrawn or difficult to approach, when that isn’t who she really is.

🌿 She may become overly self-aware, constantly analysing how she comes across rather than simply being her natural self.

🌿 She may find herself more watchful or guarded around certain people or in certain situations, as though she is constantly checking whether it is safe to relax and be herself.

🌿 At the extreme end, she may feel unsettled, wary, “sketchy” or on edge – as though something isn’t quite right, even when she can’t explain why. Everything may look fine on the outside, yet something inside her doesn’t feel settled.

🌿 This prolonged state of stress can show up in all sorts of ways – nervousness, anxiety, low mood, irritability, fatigue, low mood, digestive issues, bloating, stomach troubles, changes in weight, inflammation, tension or simply feeling like her body is constantly trying to regain balance.

🌿 She may also struggle with receiving what she needs. Perhaps she’s very good at giving, helping and caring for others, but finds it uncomfortable to ask, receive, rest or allow herself to be supported.

WHEN A FERN HAS TO WEAR A CACTUS MASK 🌵

On the flip side, you might be a Fern who's had to adapt to your environment by wearing a Cactus mask.

You've been trying to push through, fix yourself, challenge yourself or become more resilient – just like a Cactus – rather than recognising that something in your environment is off. From the outside, it may look like you’re coping, but inside, you’re longing to feel settled, safe and more like yourself.

You may have become so used to coping, adapting and getting on with things that you have forgotten that you are actually a Fern.

The Cactus mask can make you look strong, independent and capable. You may even be proud of how much you can handle, but underneath it, you may still be longing for shade, shelter, softness, retreat, connection and somewhere to truly belong.

The mask isn't who you are. It's how you learned to cope.

This is where you stop asking What do I need to do to become stronger? and start asking What do I need to feel safe enough to thrive?

Because the next step isn’t necessarily about trying harder, fixing yourself or becoming more resilient. It’s about letting go, surrendering, changing, and allowing yourself to be replanted in the conditions and eco-system you were always meant to grow in.

In the right place, the right setting and the right environment, with the right people.

From survival mode to flourishing mode.

From Cactus to the Fern you were always meant to be.

And eventually, arriving at your final destination - Lavender: calm, relaxed, settled and at peace. 🌿💜

Because when you are in flourishing conditions, this is where health, wealth, happiness, harmony and belonging can reside.

It’s not about becoming someone else - it’s about creating the conditions that allow you to become more fully yourself, and to prosper from that.

Cactus Versus Fern

🌵 The Cactus

- The Cactus has learned to survive conditions that aren't particularly nourishing.

- She may be independent, tough, productive and capable and can tolerate a lot.

- She can keep going when she's exhausted, push through discomfort and tell herself she doesn't need much.

- She adapts because she has had to.

- The problem is that surviving becomes so normal that she can mistake it for thriving.

- She may live in an environment that is harsh, competitive, noisy, demanding or emotionally unsafe and simply become better at enduring it.

- She may surround herself with people who require her to be strong, useful, accommodating or constantly available.

The Cactus often thinks:

"I should be able to cope with this."

"Other people manage."

"I just need to try harder."

"I can't be too sensitive."

"I need to toughen up."

And because she has become so good at surviving, other people may not realise how much the environment is costing her.

🌿 The Fern

- The Fern is different. She doesn't necessarily lack resilience.

- In fact, she may be incredibly resilient, but she is more affected by the conditions around her.

- But give her the right environment and you can see an entirely different woman emerge.

- She may become calmer, more energetic, more creative, more sociable, more optimistic and more herself.

- She doesn't need to spend all her energy protecting herself from her surroundings, so that energy becomes available for living.

That's why the Fern needs an environment that feels safe, supportive, connected, spacious and nourishing.

She may find herself in environments where she never quite feels able to be herself. She notices things that other people seem to overlook - the atmosphere in a room, a change in someone's tone, tension between people, too much noise, too much light, a relentless schedule or the feeling that something just isn't right. She can also have a strong radar for people or environments that take more than they give, because she notices the imbalance long before anyone says it.

The problem is, she may have spent years believing these things were flaws in her, but they aren't flaws - they're simply information about the conditions in which she flourishes.

The really interesting bit

A Fern can become very Cactus-like. She can be raised to be a Cactus or forced to be one, just to survive. Put her in the wrong environment for long enough and she'll either adapt or crash and burn. If she sticks it out, she'll become tougher, more guarded, more independent and less trusting.

She’ll learn not to ask for what she needs, and then she may start to believe she’s a Cactus who just isn’t coping as well as she should.

But take her out of survival mode and put her somewhere that suits her - with the right people, the right pace, the right amount of stimulation, enough rest, meaningful connection, safety and room to be herself - and something changes.

She doesn't become weak. She becomes well.

That's why it's not a case of "Fern = Good" and "Cactus = Bad". It's a case of: A true Cactus is brilliant at surviving where the Fern was never meant to live.

Ultimately, the goal isn't to turn the Fern into a Cactus so she can tolerate more. It's to help her recognise what she needs to flourish - and then have the courage to cultivate that environment and embrace who she was always meant to be.

The problem isn’t the Fern - it’s the eco-system she’s been trying to grow in – the people around her, her community, workplace, sense of purpose and even the location she lives in. When those things aren’t correct for her, she may never quite feel “just right”. 🌿
